The World Future Council based in Germany, of which Judge Weeramantry is a founding member, requested the Centre to conduct a study of the teachings of the great religions on the long-term human future. The initial stage of this research involved Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. A preliminary report on this prepared by the Centre under Judge Weeramantry’s supervision, was presented to the Council at its meeting in Hamburg May 2007. The report was well received and the Centre was requested to prepare a further study on Christianity and Judaism with a possible inclusion of Confucian teaching as well. This study is underway with a view to presenting a report to the next Council meeting in May 2008.
The study has taken into consideration such matters as climate change and environmental damage. The resulting study could be of much significance and could be of world wide interest. It is also hoped that the study will be published in book form in 2008.
