The World Future Council has recognized best policies through an award called the Future Policy Award since the year 2009, when the first such award was bestowed upon the City of Belo Horizonte, Brazil as the best Food Security Award. These awards which follow the UN annual themes are selected subsequently to a detailed research by the World Future Council and submitted to an international expert panel to be considered. Whilst, H.E. Judge Weeramantry, the Founder Chairman of WICPER and Councillor of the World Future Council functions as Chair of this panel, it also has a number of distinguished Councilors such as Marie Claire Cordonier Segger and Count Hans-Christof von Sponeck and the Director of the World Future Council Head Office, Alexandra Wandel as its members.
Last year, as the UN celebrated its year dedicated to biodiversity, the Costa Rican Biodiversity Law was awarded the Future Policy Award 2010. On July 5, 2011 the World Future Council announced those policies which have been shortlisted to be considered for the Future Policy Award 2011.
