Neshan Gunasekera, Project Director of WICPER, was invited by the Department of Allied Health Sciences of the University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka to facilitate a cross disciplinary workshop to highlight the significance of the UN Day dedicated for the Rights of the Disabled ( UNGA Res. 47/3 of 1992) on December 3,2010.
The theme of the workshop was Our Duties Toward the Mentally and Physically Disabled Persons and the training focused on the various methods through which young leaders could assist and support persons with mental or physical disabilities. The project was aimed at taking forward the ideals set out in UN Res.47/703 of 1992, which was passed by the General Assembly with a view ëtoward fully integrating persons with disabilities into societyí. Young leaders representing both the sciences and the humanities attended this training and subsequently concluded the project with a visit to the cancer ward of the Peradeniya Hospital, where they interacted with the patients. This project was facilitated by the Training for Trusteeship Alumni, and initiated by N. Arvinth (TFT2009) , from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
