Neshan Gunasekera, Legal Assistant to Judge C.G. Weeramantry attended the 5th World Future Council Annual General Meeting 2011, titled, “The Next 5 Years : Growing and Acting Together” from the 4th – 6th November 2011 at Hamburg, Germany.
The members of the Council, Supervisory Board, Board of Advisors and staff discussed and drew up strategies and activities for the coming year. Key topics were the upcoming Earth Summit in Rio in 2012, rights of future generations and the spreading of best policy solutions in climate/energy, sustainable ecosystems, sustainable economies and peace and disarmament.
Overall goal:
• Further develop the WFC as a strong voice for future generations and for common ethical values
Objectives:
• Review and evaluate progress since the WFC was founded 4,5 years ago
• Inspire common ideas and activities for a WFC five year agenda to save civilisation for the future
• Provide space for a dialogue for Councillors, advisors and staff, and a platform for strengthening representation of future generations and promoting best policies from around the world
• Agree concrete steps for enhanced Councillor engagement and commitment and effective organisational culture
• Elect committed members as Commission Chairs
• Broaden membership of the Council in terms of geographical representation in Africa and Latin America, gender and business expertise
• Ensure enhanced financial security by commitments for fundraising
