A Consultation of seventy religious leaders and leading thinkers and policy makers was held on the theme – Faith, Shared Wisdom and International Law – in Kuala Lumpur from October 3rd–6th 2010. It was jointly convened by the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (Colombo), the Centre for Dialogue, La Trobe University (Melbourne), The International Movement for a Just World (Kuala Lumpur), and the Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust (Chennai), with the support of the Government of Malaysia.
Religious dispute has often been a source of division and conflict, both within and between countries, but the belief of the Weeramantry Centre, Centre for Dialogue and La Trobe was that the common insights of the world’s religions can be a source of healing and peace. Therefore, this working consultation was held to address the contribution that world religious and ethical traditions can make to the resolution of some of the major crises currently confronting humanity.
The proposals were drawn up from a range of initiatives to help put those contributions into effect, and to ensure on-going consultation and collaboration by establishing an international multi-religious standing committee. The Standing Committee’s responsibility was to oversee the establishment of a Secretariat to implement agreed initiatives, together with more details about the organisation of the Consultation.
