WICPER partners with UNESCO Sri Lanka in the Launch of the National Action Plan on Education for Peace and Sustainable Development

This successful event was organized by the Sri Lanka National Commission UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.  Further, the Ministries of Economic Development, Environment, Health and Social Welfare are all main partners in implementing this National Action plan.
 
The occasion comprised of several speeches made by distinguished personalities such as the UN Resident Representative Mr. Subinay Nandi, Honorable Felix Perera Minister for Social Services, Honorable Bandula Gunawardana Minister for Education along with three youth representatives, namely Mr. Danushka Weraduwege, Mr. Arvinth Nallathamby and Ms. Ziyana Ahmed, who were given the tasks of addressing the gathering and to share their perspectives on issues pertaining to Peace Education and Sustainable Development.

These three youth representatives were exemplary to the active participation of youth in furthering sustainable development within the country, They were all selected from amongst the Alumni members of the Training for Trusteeship programme of WICPER, which is a pioneering educational initiative of the Weeramantry International Center that enables and empowers youth to strive towards achieving sustainable development through a stress on duties toward each other, the environment and to future generations. Further, these three youth represented the various communities in Sri Lanka and adhered to speaking in the three languages Sinhalese, Tamil and English and thus was on par with the National Trilingual Policy which was launched on January 21st by the President of Sri Lanka.

The event went on to highlight the aforementioned diversity through a number of vocal and dance performances conducted by Visharada Edward Jayakody, which integrated a number of cultural elements in Sri Lanka.
