“Equity, Sustainability and Transformability” by Judge C G Weeramantry

Judge C. G. Weeramantry, on the invitation of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Kelaniya, delivered the keynote address on the themes of “Equity, Sustainability and Transformability” at the Annual Research Symposium that was scheduled for today the 03rd of November 2011, hosted at the University premises. The audience at the initiation of the symposium consisted of members of the academic staff of the universities, senior administrators and graduate students.

The address by Judge Weeramantry titled “Sustainable Development, Peace Studies and Justice” provided great insight to the causes of current situations in the world from a perspective of International Law. His address included several examples of religion and ancient wisdom of legal systems that were in place before modern civilization, that managed situations of conflict and justice similar to issues faced by the present generation and he continued to stress the importance of the positive results of these examples.  He related the present world dynamics in light of the three categories of his address and further impressed upon his audience that the nuclear threat violates all three of the above principles of Sustainable Development, Peace Studies and Justice.

The symposium this year was of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature. This is main research activity of the University of Kelaniya, and brings together scholars from all six faculties and all disciplines.
