A total of three eminent consecutive legal awareness camps have been incorporated into the Weeramantry International Center Annual working calendar for the Year 2012. This is the second leg of Legal awareness camps, a continuation of the previous year’s programmes that were conducted in Hambantota, Ampara and Mannar respectively.
This year, WICPER will travel to Badulla on the 14th - 15th of March 2012, Hatton on the 17th -18th of March and Jaffna in June 2012 during the course of this year and bridge young leaders from each of these districts to participate and benefit from this programme.
The objectives of the Weeramantry International Centre For Peace Education and Research are to contribute to the development of the legal empowerment and awareness system in Sri Lanka which addresses the legal needs of the community, and to improve access to law by the community.
One aspect of the center’s priorities during the 2009–2011 Legal aid Series is the legal empowerment Project, which will investigate the access to justice and legal needs of economically and socially disadvantaged people in Sri Lanka.
This programme will bring together a large number of stakeholders and is supported by a number of institutions as in the past, the Ministry of Justice, The Legal Aid Commission of Sri Lanka, Mediation Boards, Human Rights Commission and the Access to Justice Project in Sri Lanka.
