Judge C. G. Weeramantry, on the invitation of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Kelaniya, delivered the keynote address on the themes of “Equity, Sustainability and Transformability” at the Annual Research Symposium that was scheduled for today the 03rd of November 2011, hosted at the University premises. The audience at the initiation of the symposium consisted of members of the academic staff of the universities, senior administrators and graduate students.
Neshan Gunasekera, Legal Assistant to Judge C.G. Weeramantry attended the 5th World Future Council Annual General Meeting 2011, titled, “The Next 5 Years : Growing and Acting Together” from the 4th – 6th November 2011 at Hamburg, Germany.
The members of the Council, Supervisory Board, Board of Advisors and staff discussed and drew up strategies and activities for the coming year. Key topics were the upcoming Earth Summit in Rio in 2012, rights of future generations and the spreading of best policy solutions in climate/energy, sustainable ecosystems, sustainable economies and peace and disarmament.
Judge C. G. Weeramantry delivered the opening lecture at the seminar on “Performing through Good Governance and the Rule of Law” conducted by the Skills Development Fund Ltd under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development on the 29th of October 2011. The seminar was attended by representatives from both the public and private sector.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Right Livelihood Award Laureate Wangari Maathai passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on 26 September 2011, according to her family. Prof. Maathai had long been struggling with cancer.
Mr Michael Silberman, Director, Innovations, Greenpeace International and Ms Susannah Vila, Director – Content and Outreach, Movements.org, conducted full-day training on strategy, new media and winning campaigns on September 5th, 2011.
The Fourth Annual Training For Trusteeship Workshop 2011 under the theme of Youth Activation: Duties Towards Our Common Heritage was successfully completed in September 2011.
This year’s workshop consisted of 38 Sri Lankan participants covering all sixteen universities and youth groups and 33 foreign participants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and USA.
Janani Wijetunge, Peace Studies and Training for Trusteeship Workshops Coordinator, was in the USA from August to September 2011, on an International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), which was sponsored by the US State Department.
Neshan Gunasekera, Project Director of WICPER attended the 5th UNESCO Asian Youth Forum, which was held from August 22-26, 2011 in the Republic of Korea.
In celebration of the United Nations International Year of Youth, spear headed by five “British Council’s Global Changemakers”, Sarah Jameel, Lihini Ratwatte, Sulakshana Senanayake, Sikander Sabeer and Mohamed Husni broke the World Record on the 12th of August which is the International Youth Day.
Part of the organising team of this event is consisted of TFT Alumni and Neshan Gunasekera, Project Director WICPER at the event spoke of the duty of the youth to be trustees of this world.
The Weeramantry International Centre attended the Opening Ceremony of the International Camp of the Differently Abled Girl Guides at Ladies College, Colombo 07 on Friday, 12th August 2011 at 5pm
The WICPER successfully concluded two Youth Empowerment and Legal Awareness Programmes in Ampara and Mannar in July 2011. At the programme we raised awareness among the youth about the Courts System of Sri Lanka, Family Law, Criminal Law, Child Rights, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Fundamental Rights, Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, Rural Poverty Reduction and Peace Building.
The World Future Council has recognized best policies through an award called the Future Policy Award since the year 2009, when the first such award was bestowed upon the City of Belo Horizonte, Brazil as the best Food Security Award.
Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research were commended for the youth based programme, ‘Training For Trusteeship’ by H.E. Patricia Butenis, U.S. Ambassador in her speech ‘Independence Day Remarks’ celebrating the 4th of July for the year 2011.
The 21st Rotaract District Assembly 3220 was held on the 26th of June 2011, at the Galle Face Hotel, where Mr. Neshan Gunasekara, Project Director of WICPER and the Training For Trusteeship Programme was invited as the keynote speaker. He addressed the Assembly on the topic ‘Duties of Current Generation Toward Future Generations’, during which he called on all Rotaractors in Sri Lanka to do their utmost to contribute toward achieving a lasting peace and sustainable development in Sri Lanka.
Stitch, along with the Rotaract Clubs of Spectrum Institute and Colombo Fort, the Maherakanth Foundation as well as volunteers from the Training for Trusteeship program, under the Weeramantry International Center for Peace, Education and Research conducted a medical camp for the community in the Uswetakeiyawa area in Pamunugama.
The inauguration ceremony and the establishment of provincial subcommittee was held on the 23rd June 2011 from 1.30pm to 5pm at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort.

The first of the three Youth Empowerment and Legal Awareness Programmes planned for this year by WICPER was successfully concluded in Hambantota from the 26th to the 27th of March 2011.
The Weeramantry International Centre was invited to convey the philosophy of the Training For Trusteeship (TFT) workshop as a model with which to improve the leadership in environmental advocacy and policy making at the LEAF conference (Leaders of Environmental Advocacy Forum) organized by Periclean Scholars of the Elon University of North Carolina U.S.A. on the 22nd and 23rd of Jan 2011 Further, a video message by Judge C.G. Weeramantry on the theme “Tread Lightly on the Earth: Religion, the Environment and our Common Future” was shown at the conference.
A Consultation of seventy religious leaders and leading thinkers and policy makers was held on the theme – Faith, Shared Wisdom and International Law – in Kuala Lumpur from October 3rd–6th 2010. It was jointly convened by the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (Colombo), the Centre for Dialogue, La Trobe University (Melbourne), The International Movement for a Just World (Kuala Lumpur), and the Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust (Chennai), with the support of the Government of Malaysia.
Judge Weeramantry was invited by the City Montessori School, Lucknow India to deliver the Key Note Address at the 11th World Chief Justices Conference which was held in Lucknow, India from December 7-16, 2010. During this Conference, Judge Weeramantry met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and several Chief Justices from across the globe.
Neshan Gunasekera, Project Director of WICPER, was invited by the Department of Allied Health Sciences of the University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka to facilitate a cross disciplinary workshop to highlight the significance of the UN Day dedicated for the Rights of the Disabled ( UNGA Res. 47/3 of 1992) on December 3,2010.
Judge Weeramantry was invited to present his views by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission on November 29, 2010 at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for Strategic Studies.
The much anticipated first volume of the memoirs of Judge Weeramantry was launched on November 24th at an event at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo Sri Lanka. The book was launched by Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala, former Ambassador to the United Nations and event was attended by Chief Justice Asoka De Silva, Mr. Sam Wijesinha , former Secretary General of Parliament and Dr. Wickrama Weerasooria.
Training for Trusteeship Workshops are organized annually by WICPER. The aim of these workshops is to train future leaders in the concept that they have duties and responsibilities toward their communities, to the environment and to future generations. The concept of trusteeship is emphasized to bring home to them the notion of responsible management of our inherited cultural resources and heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.
Judge Weeramantry was the guest speaker of the 63rd Annual Public Lecture by the United Nations Associations of Sri Lanka on his latest book Tread Lightly on the Earth: Religion, the Environment and the Human Future. This event was held in Colombo 3rd of May 2010 and hosted an audience of over 100 esteemed guests. Also the booklet “Why Nuclear Dangers Grow from Day to Day” by Judge Weeramantry was handed out in an attempt to create an awareness of the nuclear dangers that is prevalent and also in the wake of the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will be held in May 2010 at UN Headquarters in New York.
